Natural Cleaning Products For Your Home

In our everyday lives, we are constantly exposed to environmental chemicals. We can minimise our exposure to things like pollution and electro-magnetic radiation by making choices about where we live and the places we go to. In our homes, we can begin to eliminate our exposure by using natural cleaning products. Using simple household items, our homes can be clean and chemical free.

There is a plethora of products on the market now, some better than others. So it’s important to be informed about what ingredients need to be avoided. Many brands do not label their product ingredients – they are available on their company website only. It is worth remembering that there are 40,000 chemicals permitted for use in consumer products. Many are considered safe only because they’ve been used for a long time without known adverse effects. They haven’t actually been tested. Astonishing isn’t it! Some of the ingredients in commercially available cleaning products are Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDC’s). These can be found by checking the website for the Australian Therapeutic Goods Act at www.tga.gov.au

There are many recipes for making your own home cleaning products such as those listed in the book  Like Grandma Used to Make contains some great recipes too.

Here are some easy and effective recipes you can try at home:

All-purpose cleaner :

 Add the following to a spray bottle:

• 1 teaspoon bicarb of soda
•  ½ teaspoon grated olive oil soap
• Two tablespoons of white vinegar 

Shake and wait 2 minutes. Then fill the bottle with warm water and shake again. Add 2-3 drops of pure essential oil if desired (Orange, Lemon, Bergamot for example).

Toilet cleaner:

Sprinkle toilet bowl liberally with bicarb of soda then pour one cup of white vinegar around the bowl, close lid, wait ten minutes and flush. You will be amazed with how well it can clean your toilet! Alternatively choose one our natural toilet cleaners 

Scourer

In a jar combine:

• One cup bicarb of soda
• ½ cup white vinegar
• One teaspoon citrus peel or 3 drops of essential oil
• One cup coarse salt

Mould spray

Add tea tree oil or clove bud oil to warm water in a spray bottle or select from our natural mould sprays
